County Board of Supervisors Activities
The County Board of Supervisors is the legislative branch of the county government and operates under powers granted by the state legislature. Those powers are listed in Chapter 59 of the state statutes and include the authority to establish the annual county budget and set the property tax rate for county purposes. The County Board creates county policy, approves expenditures and generally serves as the governing body of the county government.
The County Board meets on the first and third Tuesdays of each month at 7:30 pm in the County Board Chambers located on the third floor of the County Administration Building at 1010 56th Street in Kenosha.
Board Member Selection
The Kenosha County Board of Supervisors consists of 23 members and is nonpartisan. Each is elected from a geographic district of an average of 7,236 people. Those districts are adjusted every ten years after the federal census is complete.
The county board acts by resolutions or ordinances submitted by the standing committees, special committees and occasionally by an individual supervisor. Those resolutions and ordinances are generally adopted by the standing committees at regular or special committee meetings and then forwarded to the county board for consideration. Matters brought directly to the board are generally referred to the appropriate standing committee for review prior to board action. The board may form special committees from time to time for the purpose of reviewing specific matters."
Below is a presentation from the Wisconsin Counties Association that goes more in-depth on the roles of county government. This presentation includes information on county governments throughout the state which may or may not specifically apply to Kenosha County.
