Bristol School District #1 has turned the corner, but there is still a long way to go!
While paying attention as my two children worked their way through the school, the same one I attended, I was disappointed with what I saw regarding curriculum priorities (i.e., non-core subjects like DEI, etc.), spending, and the divisiveness within the staff. Three years ago, I ran for school board and was honored to be elected to serve. I was the sole conservative voice on the five-person board and did what I could to make a positive change.
Last year, Bristol residents came out in force against the third school funding referendum in three years and elected two new board members with traditional values. I was nominated for and accepted the position of Board President.
In My One Year Leading the District, We Accomplished Much:
Despite all claims made by the former majority, we’ve kept all programs and increased pay to our valuable staff without the funding that would have come from the referendum.
Required staff accountability, which is expected from well-compensated professionals, and helped non-conforming individuals find other careers.
Stabilized our curriculum and grading systems so that student progress can be accurately measured.
There Is Still Much to Do:
Revise policies that have not been updated in over 12 years.
Identify and hire an experienced District Administrator who respects our community's values and implements our school improvement initiatives.
Return to broader participation in budgeting to ensure that taxpayer money is spent wisely.
Continue to audit how the $22.5 million intended for building additions and renovations was spent.
Implement accounting systems to be accurate and transparent.
What Is at Stake?
At stake is the education of our children and the responsible management of taxpayers hard earned money.
Some school board candidates have been vocal about diversity in all classrooms and advocate for returning former non-performing staff onto the payroll.
Our community cannot afford to go backward. There are more than enough voters in our district to maintain the hard-fought gains we’ve made by honoring my running mate Victor Nightengale and me to serve, but this can’t happen if voters don’t turn out.
