Kenosha County Educator’s View on Brittany Kinser

An RPKC member & retired Kenosha County educator met with WI DPI Superintendent candidate Brittany Kinser. Here‘s her take:

I had the pleasure to speak with Brittany Kinser at our last Pints and Politics in January. As an educator who taught for 47 years I was thrilled to be in a conversation with an educator whose focus was doing what was best for our kids. She and I were on the same page about the decline in the academic preparedness in not only our state but the entire nation. I shared with her that when I began teaching in 1968 the USA was ranked in the top three nations in the world in academic excellence in literacy (reading skills) and math. When I retired in 2016 sadly we were not even ranked in the top 20 in those 2 critical academic disciplines. One of her most recent undertakings was her co-founding a high impact Literacy initiative aimed at addressing the reading crisis. One stat she shared with me was that 3 out of 10 students are not reading well enough which impedes them from being career or college ready. Percentage wise that equates to only 32% of or graduating seniors are career, college or trade school ready! That is totally unacceptable. Thus one of her top priorities she told me was restoring the high standards in education with emphasis on teaching reading, math and writing. This way our kids will be ready for meaningful jobs, college or master a trade.

Brittany stated that she decided to run for WI State Superintendent when she saw an article stating that the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction in August lowered standards in reading for our schools. We both agreed that lowering the standard is not fixing the problem, but creating bigger educational issues.

Other topics we touched on was that she was in favor of partnering with parents to champion their kid’s education and making sure money we receive is getting to the classrooms and also awarding deserving teachers. She wants transparency, innovativeness and predictability across all schools in Wisconsin and at the Department of Public Instruction. She is the only candidate who supports the Wisconsin School Choice program. Brittany also stated that she wants to see an increase in Special Ed reimbursements. Bottom line is, her whole focus is putting the kids first and restoring high standards to ensure our kids are learning how to read, write and do math.
